Set during the Mexican-American War, this is the story of Captain John Boyd (played brilliantly by the very underrated Guy Pearce) being sent to a post in California after a battle. He joins a small group there and madness ensues, involving cannibalism/vampirism, Indian legend and survival.
This is a different sort of movie, with a comedic tone set early and gradually getting darker and darker throughout, resulting in a fairly interesting horror/comedy film. There are some pretty good performances here from Pearce as well as Robert Carlyle, Jeffrey Jones and Neal McDonough (another lesser known but talented actor). David Arquette also makes an appearance; however, it is mercifully brief. If you are a fan of dark comedy and/or horror, this one is recommended.
